Signposting America

In one of Connecticut's oldest historic districts, artist Norm Magnusson has been erecting cast-aluminum historical markers that commemorate this odd moment in the American timeline. Designed to mimic that area's "on this site" signs, Magnusson calls attention to the "Walmartification" of American culture, politicized debates over global warming and "intelligent design," and the Iraq War to name a few. To me, his work asks: Is this really what we want to be remembered for? His installation On This Site Stood closed at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum's Cornish Family Sculpture Garden on August 12. More signs here.
